Ignorance implicatures of modified numerals

چکیده
Abstract Modified numerals, such as at least three and more than five , are known to sometimes give rise ignorance inferences. However, there is disagreement in the literature regarding nature of these inferences, their context dependence, differences between . We present a series experiments which sheds new light on issues. Our results show that (a) inferences robust those (b) presence strength triggered by both depends question under discussion (QUD), (c) whether detected given experimental setting partly task participants asked perform (e.g., an acceptability versus inference task). offer Optimality Theoretic account findings. In particular, effect captured assuming performing task, take speaker ’s perspective order determine expression optimal certain epistemic state, while they addressee what most likely state expression. To execute latter fully rational manner, have higher-order reasoning about alternative expressions could used. Under assumption do not always but also often resort so-called unidirectional optimization finds natural explanation. This allows us relate our finding asymmetries comprehension production been found language acquisition.

متن کاملBare Numerals and Scalar Implicatures
Bare numerals present an interesting challenge to formal semantics and pragmatics: they seem to be compatible between various readings (‘at least’, ‘exactly’, and ‘at most’ readings), and the choice of a particular reading seems to depend on complex interactions between contextual factors and linguistic structure. The goal of this article is to present and discuss some of the current approaches...
متن کاملTwo kinds of modified numerals
In this article, I show that there are two kinds of numeral modifiers: (Class A) those that express the comparison of a certain cardinality with the value expressed by the numeral and (Class B) those that express a bound on a degree property. The goal is, first of all, to provide empirical evidence for this claim and second to account for these data within a framework that treats modified numer...
متن کاملExpressing ignorance or indifference Modal implicatures in Bi-directional OT
The article presents a formal analysis in the framework of bi-directional optimality theory of the free choice, ignorance and indifference implicatures conveyed by the use of indefinite expressions or disjunctions. Ignorance is expressed by standard means of epistemic logic. To express indifference we use Groenendijk and Stokhof’s question meanings. To derive implicature, Grice’s conversational...
متن کاملModified Numerals as Post-Suppositions
The paper provides a compositional account of cumulative readings with non-increasing modified numerals (aka van Benthem’s puzzle), e.g., Exactly three boys saw exactly five movies. The main proposal is that modified numerals make two kinds of semantic contributions. Their asserted/at-issue contribution is a maximization operator that introduces the maximal set of entities that satisfies their ...
